Hobbittenango has amazing views and is a peaceful location, but off the beaten path.
This deserves some explanation...It really has nothing to do with the Hobbit other then some tiny eco lodging. Do not take an uber or try to drive a car yourself! (the roads are very narrow and extremely steep) Recommend taking a guided tour to get there, or their own shuttle transportation from Antigua. It can be a stop on the way to Antigua or a side trip from Antigua. Get there early before all the others (mostly all local visitors). Once you arrive at the parking lot (which is also a challenge), you will then board an off-road vehicle to continue the journey to the entrance further up the mountain. Breathtaking views (7200ft) of the volcanos, Antigua; and if the clouds cooperate, Guatemala City, the Western Highlands, and the Pacific ocean. It helps to have a guide to take advantage of all the trails and lookout points. Enjoy a hot beverage and a snack. Plan your clothing choices for cooler temperatures due to the elevation. They have activities, shopping for local goods, and a restaurant. website
